Research project as diary
In accordance with Adorno’s insistence that the research / investigative process is an integral component of the outcome (a contribution to its ‘truth’ content) or, in a more overworked maxim, the journey is as important as the destination, this project treats the act of inquiry itself as a meaningful artefact. To capture this evolution, the research will be documented through a frequent journal of events, capturing drafts, speculative thoughts, observations and artefacts over an eight-year period, the end of the project will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the 1984-85 miners’ strike. This diaristic approach ensures that the project remains a ‘living’ investigation. The study begins with a foundational history of the region, which serves as the departure point for a more expansive methodological development before practically engaging with the landscape itself.
